Darling Harbour Flag Pole

Property NSW engaged AIRA through a formal tendering process, to remediate the Bi Centennial flag pole. The flag pole required areas of rust to be treated, NDT inspections carried out using both UT and Mag particle techniques, washing, painting and the halyard systems and hardware replaced.

Due to its location in the middle of Darling Harbour, rescue provisioning and the speed of a rescue was paramount in the planning cycle of this job. Having first accessed the pole using mobile vertical aid climbing techniques on a remote rescue set up, the main access system was established. The main access system was designed so that daily inspections of the rope could be conducted prior to use, that the techncian would be hauled up the flag pole after an initial systems function check and could also be recovered, all from the dolphin area of the pole. Once in place, a hanging scaffold was constructed and hauled up the pole to just below the works area. This served as a staging and storage area as well as a drop hazard protection for workers on the dolphin. The works secquence was:

Establish access

Sand back to bear metal all areas of corrosion

Sand back to bear metal predetermined areas for NDT

Perform NDT and remedial welding works

Wash down and collect water for disposal off site

Prime and paint three coats of top coat

Remediate the halyard systems and hardware with new or refurbished equipment.
